In addition to my year-long trans-African journey, I have returned to Africa on several occasions over the years. Each visit has added a different perspective — from overland travel and exploration to family journeys centered on wildlife, landscape, and shared experience.
Two of those trips are reflected here. In 2018, while working in Nairobi, I flew into the Masai Mara and spent time in one of East Africa’s most iconic wildlife landscapes. The Mara has an extraordinary sense of scale and intensity: wide plains, shifting light, and a constant awareness that something may appear at any moment. It is a place where photography and observation come together naturally, and where the richness of animal life makes every day in the field feel different.
In 2024, we returned to Kenya as a family and visited Amboseli before climbing Kilimanjaro. Amboseli offered another classic East African setting, with its remarkable elephant herds, open landscapes, and the unforgettable presence of Kilimanjaro rising in the background. Experiencing that with the kids made it especially memorable, turning the trip into both a wildlife adventure and a family expedition.
These journeys, together with earlier travels across the continent, reflect what continues to draw me back to Africa: its vast spaces, extraordinary wildlife, and the way travel there can combine adventure, beauty, and a real sense of connection to place.
